Channel description
This channel is all about photo editing and the photography gear used to capture the images. I cover RAW image processing and help beginner photographers learn how to use their equipment to capture and edit the photo they see in their minds. The photo editing software used on this channel is On1 Photo Raw, Luminar and Nik Collection. I also use mobile editing apps on my iPad Pro using my apple pencil. The mobile photo editing apps I use are Affinity photo, ON1 Mobile and Pixelmator Photo.
Congrats on reaching 4000 subscribers!
Thank you! This extremely humbling and awesome to be supported in this way. Thank you for being a part of this.
Great video!
Thank you!
Thanks - so much more to learn !
Yea there are some new things to learn in this version, but you really only need to know the things that are of the most interest to you. I will have individual videos on each of the new features in the coming weeks, so you can really piece together which parts you want to learn
Chris: Lots of stuff to learn. To hear it's even faster is great. I can't download my copy until I get home tomorrow. Can't wait to see what I can do with some of it. Looking forward to your training with it.
The program seems to move faster at least on my machine. We will see how it works over time though.
Thanks Chris for this update , mine does go faster as well!
That is great to hear! I am enjoying this version of ON1 so far
Chris have they fixed the cloud sync i could only get my only unEdit phots over from PC and Mac but from phone it worked very nice
I was not aware there was an issue with the cloud sync between computers. I will have to test that out to see if there was a connection for that problem
Hi Free Will Photos. I download and installed the trial version ON1 Photo Raw 2025, I can not find the the Generative Eraser icon....
Hey, the Generative Eraser is located in the retouching tools workspace. That is the 8th icon on the left bumper in the edit window. Then you will select the drop down arrow at the top of the page, and click on Generative Eraser. The keyboard shortcut on a Mac is: Option+Shit+Q or on a PC it should be ALT+Shift+Q.
Off topic, do I need to keep On1 2024 if I just installed On1 2025 ? ... (saving space) Thanks!
I just deleted the old version 2024 after i confirmed 2025 works 😅
The short answer is no you don’t need to keep it if the 2025 version is working for you. If you need to reinstall the 2024 version you can download it from your account.
That is a fair thing to do, because if you ever need to go back to the previous version you can just download it.
Thank you!
Great video, it was good to know what's coming. For me I feel they are putting to much emphasis on AI stuff, generative, etc but I not much on polishing the performance or current tools. Also the new installation and updates is something bothering for me, sometimes I need to do something quick and starts updating. Takes more time that what I need to do. Anyways, thanks for the video
That is interesting, because the installer has improved over the past few iterations of ON1. The software do feel more responsive compared to previous versions, but that is also subjective. I recommend sending ON1 support a note to see if they can help the updates move a little quicker for you. I will also note that many of the updates can be skipped if you don’t want it. That could be helpful.
Great review, Chris! A lot of really nice new features that I will undoubtedly use, BUT, sync still sucks and does not allow sub-albums. So, Adobe will still be my master library and editor, and I'll use Smart Objects to come here for the new bells and whistles. It's a bummer they have still not done this, because the new mobile app now has "Brilliance".
Hey Marc, great to hear from you, and you are correct on the account of the albums. The good news is that you can still find a way to add this software into your workflow. It is also a good sign that we are seeing updates come to the mobile app. Some day we may see layered albums.
Any improvements to the portrait module? I've found the 2024 version terrible at selecting eyes and not very usable
I have not done too much testing with the portrait AI in 2025 yet, I will have to test it out and then get back to you.
Yes, it's weird how the software can select the right size and shake off the eyes but place the selection in the wrong place. However, it's easy enough to manually identify the eyes so no more than a minor frustration.
That generative Expand looks like something I will use. Same for the depth mask.
Not to keen on the new option that you need an external account for, sort of sets a precedent for future content having to be paid for. [stability AI]
The expand tool is helpful in a pinch. I don’t think ON1 will go to a paid option, because they set the precedent that they could give you generative renders without an internet connection, that is huge and hard to put behind a paywall. I could be wrong, but I don’t think they will do that. Only time will tell though…
I will never use this software again until they speed the software up.
Hey Rob good to hear from you again, and I understand the speed issue. The speed has improved a little over the 2024.5 version, but it is not as fast as capture 1. Hope things are going well with you
@@FreeWillPhotos honestly man it's my favorite software. It's so capable! But the speed thing is a problem. I'm gonna give 25 a true test to see if the improved speed is worth it.
@@robjphotos No unfortunately it is still dam slow!!!
Good overview. My Generative AI isn't working well at all, but I'll try it your way and do it a few times.
The Generative AI models need some work. I have heard a few people mention they were getting some strange results. I wouldn't be surprised to see a new model get pushed from ON1 in the next month or so.
@@FreeWillPhotos Thanks, I hope so.
@@FreeWillPhotos the gen AI is slow..nothing like what they show in their video. They showed no loading screen. I have high end machines and both have the "loading xx-22" progress bar.
Nice work Chris. Thnaks for showing us the new features. I am looking forward to some of your videos showing the new features in action. I for one will not subscribe to Stability AI. I am a on1 everything Plus memeber which costs a fortune already and now they expect me to us a third party company to help with my edits. I don't even know the company and what they would do with my image once the have it in the cloud. Not impressed and not happy. if the regular Generative AI doesn't work Ifor me may venture back to Lightroom. Sorry for my rant .
I love your work and honesty.
Tony thanks for the feedback. There is a real cost component to using these programs and I think the option for stability AI was to keep people from needing to purchase a new GPU if their current GPU isn't strong enough to run the AI models. I think the issue we are going to see with almost every company that pushes software that uses AI, is a tax to systems requirements. I personally would like to see the AI train slow down and just get some really solid tools that allow us to shape our photos as we see fit.
With that said, I am truly enjoying the Depth Masks in ON1 2025. I seem to grab them often in my edits and that is an AI tool, so I can't complain too much about the addition of AI tools...
Just installed it. Tried generative erase on a seamless background to erase a light stand and part of the room. TOTAL FAILURE! first I get a weird content warning. I'm now doing anything on a person. It's a background. Next whe it did fill in the background It's completely wack. Words and other strange things show up. It's totally useless and a big waste of money if that's the best it can do
And don't try this generative Ai with anything remotely NSFW, even using the offline version, messages of content violation, if no box to tick you're an adult, no more On1 upgrades for me, and thats after 6 years of subscribing
Thanks for sharing this comment and I understand the frustration with the generative AI tools not working as expected. This tools can use some improvement and I think ON1 will work on it to improve the results. I am getting a mixture of good and bad results with this feature myself. What I have found works well is using the generative erase to remove the large issues in the image and then clean it up with the perfect eraser, clone stamp or healing brush. This is not as fast or simple as I would like it to be, but when I need to remove something it does help out. I am planning on making a video to show the process I am adopting with this tool, and maybe that will help out a little.
NSFW material is always tricky when it comes to AI computations. I ran into issues with PS Generative AI features when it initially launched, claiming images that were not even close NSFW content. Since this is the first iteration of including something like this into ON1 I think they will continue working on it to make it better and more reliable. I think ON1 is still a great photo editor without using the AI features.
If you have specific needs for AI generated stuff, it is better to go to a dedicated tool like comfyUI (Mac or pc) and tailor to your needs there. If trying to build NSFW or some kind of SciFi /fantasy scene, for example you will just be frustrated while it tries to pound a square peg into a round hole.
@@FreeWillPhotos yes completely agree re great editor and not a subscription etc. Still perplexed quality of results aside given the Ai is done on your machine and not some server somewhere, and it's your own image you have put there, it's not an 8 year old finding things that aren't appropriate. And ironically the image that was experimenting with would be"safe" for Instagram..... Keep up the great videos
Good but too wordy. Prefer to get to the points, not word count. No offense itended.
Thank you for this comment and I can appreciate getting straight to the point. I will see what I can do in future content to provide information in a more succinct manner.
